The British Red Cross helps people in crisis,
whoever and wherever they are. It is part of a global voluntary network,
responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.
The British Red Cross enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare
for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is
over, The British Red Cross help them recover and move on with their lives.
Asia
The British Red Cross has played a lead role in helping communities in the
Indonesian province of Aceh rebuild their lives after the tsunami.
It has also deployed a logistics Emergency Response Unit (ERU) to southern Java,
where it is providing crucial support to the relief operation following May's
devastating earthquake.
Aside from emergency activities, operations are focused on four countries --
Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia and North Korea -- with an emphasis on disaster
management and health care.
In Bangladesh, the Red Cross is training thousands of people to respond
effectively to the threat of cyclones and flooding.
Middle East & North Africa
British Red Cross activities focus on disaster management, particularly in
Jordan and Syria.Close cooperation continues with other components of the Red
Cross Movement in response to the significant humanitarian needs in Iraq, Israel
and the Palestinian Territories.
Southern Africa
The British Red Cross provides support and assistance to vulnerable communities
across southern Africa affected by HIV and lack of access to clean water,
sanitation and food.
The countries of the region are varyingly affected by food insecurity and also
consistently experience some of the highest rates of HIV in the world. In 2002/3
and 2005/6 the British Red Cross supported people suffering from food
emergencies by launching the Southern Africa Food Crisis Appeal. We continue to
work with communities and families to provide care and support to those affected
by HIV and strengthen longer term food security.
East Africa
The sheer scale of needs in East Africa pose a dramatic challenge, but clear
analysis and careful planning have put the British Red Cross at the forefront of
a broad range of projects that change the lives of thousands people every year.
Current activities are focused in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
West Africa
Although the region has stabilised somewhat since the severe food crisis in the
Sahel in 2005,chronic humanitarian needs persist. Conflict, political insecurity
and environmental problems threaten the livelihoods of millions.
The British Red Cross is involved in projects in Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone,
the Democratic Republic of Congo, Niger and Mali.
Americas & Caribbean
Unpredictable and extreme weather, chronic poverty, social problems and HIV/AIDS
pose significant humanitarian challenges in the Americas & Caribbean.
The British Red Cross works closely both with its own Overseas Branches as well
as with National Societies in the region, focusing particularly on disaster
management and community resilience.
The British Red Cross is part of the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world's largest
independent humanitarian organisation.
