SEAT was founded in 1950 as a subsidiary of Fiat, with a chief share owned by the Spanish Government under the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.
The acronym "SEAT"  ' Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo'

Originally, SEAT manufactured re-badged Fiat models which differed very little visually from the products of their Italian owners. The SEAT Panda for example was based on the Fiat Panda. The SEAT 600  was the first car for many Spanish families.
